ADS Service Error: Extension CLSID Verification Host has stopped working

After stopping the Advantage Database Server service you receive an error message as follows: Extension CLSID Verification Host has stopped working. We've seen this error message when working on a Windows Server 2008.

It actually stems from the Windows Data Execution Prevention (DEP) functionality where the service is being prevented from starting up due to excessively restrictive security settings.

Solution:

Within the Windows Control Panel; look in the System settings, Advanced System Settings, Performance, Settings, Data Execution Prevention. Select "Turn on DEP for essential programs and services only" - do not select "Turn on DEP for all programs and services".

After changing the setting, a reboot of the server is required.
