| If you have a single Windows XP PC in the office then you can access your Prevail remotely by one of the following methods: 1. Get your network technician to open up the firewall (port 3389 by default) and enable ‘remote desktop access’. OR 2. Use gotomypc (www.gotomypc.com) or logmein (www.logmein.com) or such similar remote access services (logmein.com offer a free remote access service that works fine with Prevail). Both of these methods tie up the PC workstation in the office when it is in use remotely, so it’s of only use to a single remote user. If you need more than a single remote connection to Prevail then you’ll need to implement a more technical solution by using a server solution at the office, either Windows 2000 or Windows 2003 server – with terminal services enabled. Windows 2000/2003 server comes with just TWO concurrent access licenses. Additional CALs (Client Access Licenses) can be purchased directly from Microsoft or from a software vendor – often Windows server is sold as a bundled pack with a five user CAL pack. Check with your IT technician for more information. Chances are that if you have a server in your law firm that you already have this ability, it simply needs turning on! Small Business Server 2003 is not an effective solution for concurrent terminal service usage. Using a VPN to access Prevail is not recommended because of potential performance and data corruption issues. |
