Using Prevail's Auto Update Feature
In the software business, frequent updates are generally considered a good thing—they're indicative of ongoing development and a company that listens to its clients. However, there is also a down side—somebody has to take the time to download and install the updates. If you're the person responsible for administering Prevail in your office, this lucky someone is you. Admittedly, this used to be a bit of a pain. You had to download the update program to the server then run it on all your workstations. Fortunately, times have changed. If you have version 3.9 or higher of Prevail, it will update itself. All you need to do is tell it to. Here's how: First of all, connect your computer to the Internet in the normal fashion. It doesn't matter if this is through AOL, a local dialup ISP or a high-speed DSL or cable modem connection. All that matters is that you're on the Internet. Close Prevail on your machine and open the Prevail Control Panel program (if you don't have Prevail Control Panel installed on your computer, put in the Prevail CD and choose the "Install Administration" option to install it). One of the options on the Prevail Control Panel is called "Auto Update". Simply click this button and the program will automatically download the latest version of Prevail from our web site and install it on your server. Once it's on your server, each time any of your workstations logs into Prevail, that user will get a message that says "A new version of Prevail is available. Would you like to install it now?" As long as the user answers yes, the new version will automatically be copied onto his or her computer. That's all there is to it. A one-click download will automatically distribute the latest version of Prevail to every computer on your network. Pretty cool, huh? A few important reminders are in order. If you're still running 3.7, you'll have to first update to 3.9 the old-fashioned way before you can take advantage of any of the automatic update features of 3.9. To find out what version you're running, load Prevail and choose Help | About from the menu. If your version number is 3.9.0 or higher, now's a good time for you to try out the auto update feature. If your version number us 3.7 or lower, now's a good time to upgrade to 3.9. Call us and we'll send you a CD. If you can't figure out what your version is because your Prevail doesn't have a menu across the top, then you're running Prevail for DOS. Now's a good time to hit yourself in the head with a brick because the world has passed you by.
