Downloading and Installing AOL's Instant Messenger
In our ongoing attempt to make technical support more convenient
for our Prevail Community, we would like to introduce a new way to provide you with technical
support: AOL Instant Messenger.
If you have Internet access at your office, you're only a couple clicks away from speaking
live to a technical support representative. There's no need to pick up the phone or send us
an email. Our support staff is online all day ready to take your questions during our normal
business hours. All you need is the AOL Instant Messenger software and an AIM screen name,
both of which are free.
Downloading AIM
The first step towards instant technical support is to create your screen name. Go to
www.aim.com and click the
"New Users Click Here" button. On the next page you get to choose your screen name
and password. Your screen name should reflect your company or firm name. If your firm name
is "Smith, Waddle, Thompson & Associates", you may want to choose "SWTAssociates" or
something similar. Enter and confirm your chosen password. Finally, enter your e-mail address
and birth date then click the "Continue" button. On the following page make sure
to read all of the information. Click the "Windows" button when you're ready to
begin downloading. You should receive a message on your screen asking if you want to open
the file from it's current location or save it to disk. Choose to open it from its current
location and click the OK button.
Installing AIM
Once the download is complete you may receive another message asking if you'd like to
continue with the installation. Make sure to click "Yes" on this box. The
installation will now begin. At the beginning of the installation you'll be asked to accept
the license agreement. Click "Yes" to accept, otherwise you cannot install the
software. All of the default options it sets up for you will be fine. Click "Next"
through the next few screens and you'll see files being copied to your computer. At the end
of the installation, click the "OK" button to start Instant Messenger. Make sure
to click the link on the registration page that says, "click here to add the screen name shown above".
You're now ready to start using AOL Instant Messenger. When the Instant Messenger starts
up and logs you in, click the tab that says "List Setup". Highlight a group to which to add
your new buddy. Click the small icon near the lower left (it looks like a person waving with
a small plus sign just above their head). For your first buddy, type the name "PrevailSupport"
(without the quotes) and press Enter. We're now on your buddy list! Click the "Online"
tab and you should see us online. Just double click our name to send us a message.
